Impressive C19th bronze bust of Seneca; near life size with a good rich patination; the well cast bust accentuates his unruly hair and the character in his wrinkled face; with beard and folds in his neck, his mouth slightly open with a resolute gaze; and his head turned slightly dexter.  Raised on its original Nero Maraquina marble square stepped plinth.

Based on the 1st century BC Roman bust excavated at Herculaneum in 1754, originally thought to be Seneca the Younger the notable Roman philosopher, Scholars now believe it represents Hesoid or Aristophanes.
