An exceptional mid C19th pair of carved mahogany open armchairs in the Chippendale manner and of generous proportions; the serpentine crest rail with scrolled carving above the wide interlaced splat finely carved to a scroll work and foliate design.  The scrolled outswept arms with unusual rounded knuckles on very shapely moulded arm supports with pierced carving.  The upholstered drop in seats housed in a blind fret carved seat frame of a Chinese Chippendale design.  Raised on square chamfered legs of a conforming design; united by 'H' stretchers with unusual pierced carving.  Newly upholstered in acid green cut silk velvet.
NB A very well drawn pair of chairs in a good quality grade of mahogany to the designs of Chippendale, not to be compared with lesser early C20th copies.
English circa 1860
Very good condition, strong and sturdy, with a good rich colour and patination
